CA 374 – 2/10 Contemporary Rhetoric - started with war time propaganda song and ad. Ex: portraying the Germans as Huns and saying to beat them by buying liberty bonds. The Great War - Context - – people become very distrusting and disturbed by these ads - Analytical Turn o Purpose – purpose is to help people not fall under the allure of the propaganda and see what is really going on. I.A. Richards: Rhetoric as Remedy - “New Rhetoric” – a study of misunderstandings and its remedies o Aim – wants to prevent the Great War from happening again. o Debunking Proper Meaning and Proper Usage Superstitions – people used to think there was on specific meaning for words but that can still lead to misunderstanding. o Context Theorem of Meaning – the meaning of words comes from context. For him, context is a cluster of events that occur in our minds. We use it to fill in the blanks when we encounter something new. Ex: Cat. If we say the word cat everyone may think of something slightly different even though there is only technically one meaning. Language is radically ambiguous. o Contributions – Rhetoric is a remedy, it is a solution. Richard Weaver: Rhetoric & Values
