International Studies 101 #3 16:05 I. Introduction IOs central to globalization, non-polarity, and global governance Someone has to govern the international state in some way.  ICC is an example of  global governance. IOs are more and more important as globalization grows and post CW they act as a  bedrock and critical for stability and order. IOs more important with growing internationalization Main questions: What are IOs? What do they do? What impact do they have? II. Overview of International Organizations Defining IOs Inter-governmental vs. non-governmental organizations What is an international organization?  An intergovernmental organization.  They can be  distinguished from NGOs.  IOs have agreed to create and set up these organizations.  States are therefore members of the IO they have set up (ex: UN or WTO).  Standard  def:  You need at least three states to form an IO, they can not be bilateral.   Multiple states enter into an agreement and form organization with a  secretariat.  They may be set up by states but they also have their own independent secretariat,  offices, staff, etc.  Generally treaty based organizations.   Examples of IOs Global IOs: UN, WTO, WB, IMF< WHO, WCO, etc WTO: to supervise and liberalize international trade. WB: to promote economic development around the world.  Rich countries give money to  the WB and they assist other countries in financial aid. WHO: comes out of the UN system.  Monitors global health and issues guidelines on  how people should act regarding global health. WCO: World Customs Organization
