CASE: Wired for Hire Copyright 2010, Bradley R. Agle, PhD Synopsis “I wish the company had announced this acquisition two days ago. My life would have been so much easier.” Such are your thoughts as you contemplate a difficult decision you have to make today concerning a new hire to your IT team. In desperation you offered the security expert position to a marginally qualified person outside the company a few days ago. Now you learn that because of the acquisition, Brian, the person you really want and need, has just become available. Also, because of the state of the industry, you fear that if you don’t bring him onto your project, Brian could very well be laid-off. Background You work for Fleet Technologies, a large IT vendor, and are the technical team leader on a multimillion dollar enterprise resource project for one of the company’s newest clients. This client is a major medical device company, part of a cash-rich industry sector that Fleet has struggled to penetrate. Because of the opportunity to enter a new industry sector and the significant projected cost savings from the implementation of Fleet’s system, this project is critical for both you and your client.
