Heather Hopkins Psyc 2070 November 17, 2011 Kangaroo Care: One Page Paper The article I found is about Kangaroo Care, which is a skin to skin contact method for preemies and their mothers. After the mother gives birth, the preemie, naked expect for a diaper, is given to the mother to lie on her bare chest. This helps the preemie to calm down by lowing heart rate, improving breathing pattern, better sleeping time, and other bodily improvements. This method came about when there was a high death rate in preterm babies in the late 1970s and researchers had found that some of the defects of the preemie babies were going away or improving when the baby was held close to the mother. This technique works because the baby clams down so much when they hear their mother heart beat that they fall asleep within minutes which causes their body to function as if they were a normal sized baby with no problems.
