Kidney Disease 1 Developed by Gail P. A. Kauwell, PhD, RD, LDN Updated by Gail P. A. Kauwell, PhD, RD, LDN & Anne Mathews, PhD, RD HUN 4446 - Fall 2011 Kidney Disease • Compare normal kidney structure and function to the changes that occur in chronic kidney disease. • Describe the etiology, symptoms, clinical findings and pathophysiology associated with chronic kidney disease. Objectives • Describe the diagnostic tests/procedures and intervention strategies (i.e., medical, surgical, pharmacologic, nutritional) used to treat/manage chronic kidney disease. • Differentiate among the stages of chronic kidney disease in terms of medical and nutritional management. • Relate the signs, symptoms, clinical findings, laboratory data, diagnostic tests, and medical, pharmacologic and nutritional interventions to the underlying pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease. • Interpret the results of laboratory/diagnostic tests. Objectives • Recommend appropriate nutritional management for patients with chronic kidney disease based on the stage of the disease. • Select appropriate medical and pharmacologic interventions for patients with chronic kidney disease based on information presented in case studies.
