Computer lab for using Mplus to perform a factor analysis model with categorical observed – including Item Characteristic Curves Mplus can handle structural equation models when there are categorical endogenous observed variable. Syntactically all that needs to be added to the model is an extra line in the DATA environment which says CATEGORICAL ARE varname1 varname2 … varnamep; Note, we have already seen that categorical predictor (exogenous) variables are simply added into Mplus by the including appropriate dummy variables. They should NOT be added to the CATEGORICAL statement. By default all variables are treated as continuous and dummy variables should simply be treated as continuous. The goal of the lab today is to: Learn how to use categorical outcome variables in Mplus (including how to interpret the summary statistics) Learn how to create Item Characteristic Curves from a factor analysis model of categorical observed variables in Mplus and how to interpret them. 1. Download the alcoholism_symptoms.txt data from the class LAB website. Also, you can download the MPLUS program located there too called alcoholism_symptoms.inp This data comes from part of a research project that investigated alcoholism patients characteristics and how these were related to the potential “success” of
