Suggestions for Assignment 1 : Common mistakes Question 1 : (1) When you are asked about length of Y , it does not make sense to write ‘in wide format, Y is of length 113’ and ‘in long format, Y is of length 113*5=565’. The format (wide or long) refers to the way the data is presented. When you are writing out Y for your model, it includes all the observations from all the individuals in one single column (refer notation in Lecture 3). So length of Y is 113*5=565, which means Y has 565 rows. Note : If your study requires that you analyze only one particular Trial (say Trial 2), ignoring all the other trials, in that case your data vector Y will be of length 113 (each row will have observation from Trial 2 of each person). But, for this particular problem, you are analyzing all the trials of all the individuals. So total no. of observations=113*5, which has to be the no. of rows of Y . Also, stacking clusters (each cluster is one individual) does not reduce your vector’s length or matrix
