UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT Fall 2011 ECE 3411: Microprocessor Application Laboratory Lab 1- Sep. 12, Due by Sep 26. 1 Lab 1: ATmega644 Microcontroller and Digital Input/Output 1. Objectives The objective of this laboratory is to learn to use the 8-bit ATmega644 microcontroller to implement a simple LED controlling system. In this experiment, you will do the following: Understand the difference between microprocessors and microcontrollers Learn about the 8-bit microcontrollers in particular the ATmega644 Implement a LED controlling system using the ATmega644 microcontroller Learn to use the AVR Development tool 2. Software and documents Development Software: 1. AVR Studio 4.18: It has been installed on the computers in C30. However, it is strongly recommended to be installed on your laptop or home computer. After registering, you need to download and install AVR Studio 4.18 (build 684), SP1, SP2, SP3 at: http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=2725 2. AVRISP mkII In-System Programmer (the driver CD is included in your design kit. The installation is only required for Windows systems before WindowsXP): http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/AVRISPmkII_UG.pdf 3. AVR Toolchain Installer, at the same Atmel site as above: http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=2725 Documents (these files are posted on HuskyCT under Course Materials): 1. Datasheet for ATmega644 microcontroller. 2. Microcontrollers Fundamentals for Engineers and Scientists 3. Embedded System Design with the Atmel AVR Microcontroller Part I 4. Embedded System Design with the Atmel AVR Microcontroller Part II 5. Novice guide 3. Reading (it is better to read the assigned readings before each lab) Chapter 12 of ATmega644’s datasheet (p. 65- p. 85) Section 2.3 of “Embedded Systems Design with the Atmel AVR Microcontroller” 4.
