1 PGE 312 – SPRING 2006 Physical and Chemical Behavior of Petroleum Fluids I Test #2, 50 Minutes Solution Key Problem 1 (40 points) Figure 1 shows an idealized saturated oil reservoir with a gas cap (free gas on top of the oil zone). Because the oil and the free gas in the gas cap are in phase equilibrium, the oil is at its bubble point and the gas cap gas is at its dew point. The initial reservoir pressure of 4000 psia is the bubble point pressure of the oil and it is also the dew point pressure of the gas in the gas cap. The wells in the reservoir have been completed in such a way that production comes only from the oil zone. None of the gas cap gas is being produced at this time. A laboratory PVT study has shown that 100 reservoir barrels of the oil will yield 60 stock tank barrels of oil and 54,000 standard cubic feet of gas. The density of the stock tank oil is 0.85 gms/cc and its viscosity is 5 cp. Here are additional facts about this saturated oil reservoir. Initial reservoir pressure = 4000 psia Reservoir temperature = 200 F ˚ Reservoir area = 4800 acres Thickness of the oil zone = 130 ft Thickness of the gas cap = 50 ft Porosity = 20% Water saturation = 15% Z-factor of the gas cap gas = 0.80 at 4000 psia and 200 F ˚ Well 1 Well 8
