As you move fron one cell to the next, the call is handed off from the old cell to the next by sending a signal to the mobile base. Satellite Phones: Uses low earth Orbiting or LEO satellites. When you turn on a satellite phone, the signal goes up to any number of satellites in a compatible constellation where it is then registered with the constellation.
