Student Sample: Reading Response #1 Raymond Carver weaves an interesting transformation of his protagonist in the story, "Cathedral," by tying him together with the theme of blindness with the rather odd symbol of a cathedral. At first, the story doesn't even mention anything over the subject of cathedrals, but rather introduces the protagonist's dilemma with his wife's good friend, a man whose blindness agitates him because of his limited understanding of the condition as well as the stereotypes that he associates blindness with. "My idea of blindness came from the movies. ... the blind moved slowly and never laughed. ..led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man. .. was not something I looked forward to "(84.) From this explanation of what the protagonist expected from this blind man coming to his house, the reader can grasp that his perspective of blind people is rather narrow.
