Chapter 3 Define: “The Cell Theory” All organisms are composed of one or more cells. Cell are the basic living unit of structure and function in organisms. All cells come only from other cells.(Pre-existing cells) Stanley Miller’s experiment Earth was a reducing atmosphere, there was no oxygen.there was life before oxygen. Compare the three types of microscopy (compound light, TEM, and SEM) Compound light microscope: Light rays are brought together to focus Transmission electron microscope: two dimensional Uses electrons for energy source Condenser, objective, projector lens. Scanning electron microscope:three dimensional Uses electrons for energy source Tv viewing screen Contrast a small cell to a large cell by explaining the significance of “surface to volume” ratio. The amount of surface area affects the ability to get materials in and out of the cell. The volume becomes larger than the surface area.As cells increase in volume, the proportionate amount of surface area decreases. Briefly explain the significiant discoveries of: Antonie van Leeuwenhoek invented the light microscope. Robert Hooke first observed cells in cork.Coined the term “ cell” Schleiden and Schwann proposed the cell theory Diagram the “fluid mosaic model” of the cell membrane Model of the plasma membrane based on the changing location and pattern of protein molecules in a fluid phospholipid bilayer. Prokaryotic: Lack membrane –enclosed structures. Eukaryotic : Possess membrane-enclosed structures. ¾ Compare and contrast animal and plant cells ¾ Define and/or give the function of the following: Cell membrane Chromatin: Network of fibrils consisting of DNA and associated proteins within a nucleus Nucleolus :Dark-staining,spherical body in the nucleus that produces ribosomal subunits where
