Development The kidney develops in a ridge in the posterior wall of abdominal cavity ---- Nephrogenic cord 3 different systems (cranial ---- caudal): Pronephros; Mesonephros; Metanephros: o Pronephros in cervical region; Mesonephros in thoracolumbar region o Metanephros in sacral/pelvic region; Forms the adult kidney o Secreting part develops from metanephros Conducting part develops from ureteric bud o Wolffian duct from metanephros communicates with cloaca o Hila of kidneys face forwards while in pelvis; receive arteries from common iliac a. o Ascent stopped by suprarenals; rotate medially 90 degrees o New branches from aorta supply kidneys & old arteries disappear (segmentation in action) If old arteries fail to disappear ---- accessory renal arteries Uriniferous tubule: Structural unit of kidney o Secreting part (Nephron) develops from metanephros Bowman’s capsule; PCT; Loop of Henle; DCT
