Aufbau Principle The energy structure of a many-electron atom is obtained by filling the orbitals one- electron at a time, in order of increasing energy starting with the lowest energy. This is  called the Aufbau principle. The ordering of orbital energy levels is These are two ways to indicate the electronic structure of an atom: the Electronic  Configuration and the Orbital Diagram.
