1.1 The Importance of Learning Chemistry Science has enriched and darkened our lives. We can think of many ways chemistry has  improved our lives (e.g., clothes, shelter, transportation, entertainment). But there are many  challenges to science, too. The story of Thomas Midgley, Jr. is a wonderful example of the  challenges our society faces with new discoveries. 1.2 What is Chemistry? A. Definition 1. Chemistry  (from Egyptian kēme (chem), meaning "earth") 2. Chemistry is the "central science."  a. Everything ties to chemistry (all things are made of chemicals) b. Chemistry is a physical   science  (sciencia) c. Science is a process of knowing . This week we will spend time reviewing this  process in labs and lecture #2. 3.
