Jasmine Hill, Chief Financial Officer DRAFT COPY Be Attentive: As the CFO, I am the ethical actor in this problem because I need to determine if I value honest and moral works ethics more than cost efficiency. 1. Other grounds companies 4. workers at the cheaper company - One assumption I am making is that my sources are valid and I do believe that this company underpays its workers. - Another assumption is that the other companies are not just overcharging and actually underpaying their employees as well. - A final assumption is that by sub-contracting our landscaping we our saving our own money and time. Be Intelligent: The issue for this problem is determining whether or not we should accept a bid that is going to be the cheapest or if we should take into consideration the ethical practices of each company as well. - One value in tension is that by making this choice I will be assuming a lot about what I have heard about each landscaping company. - Also, at this time with the economy our company may not have an extra $5,000 to just through around for landscaping. - Finally, this problem addresses an issue of immigration and outsourcing so if we do not choose these landscapers it will be setting a tone for our immigrant practices in other departments. Be Reasonable: By going with the lowest bid and demanding proof of legitimacy, we are meeting all of the basic liberties. First, since the landscapers are not be enslaved to do work, by selecting the lowest company it provides them with a job. Second, we are not blindly accepting the offer. Asking for proof of legitimacy will prove that we are concerned with illegal immigrant practices. Also, if the landscapers are illegal it could bring to the surface issues they have been having with their employer. Lastly, proof of immigrant status will make it illegal for the employer not to respect the worker’s rights. The landscape company will have to follow all of its contracts. The second option of selecting the lowest bid is the worst option. It is not so bad because it is providing the landscapers with
