Objective: To design and make a battery powered torch for a specific use.

Split into
2, 1 hour
sessions
1.
As a class we will look at the torches the children
have brought in. Identifying characteristics of
some torches, purpose materials they are made
from. Fill in chart for 1 torch.
2.
As a class we will take apart a torch and look
briefly at the components. Ask what they think
they will find? battery, bulb, switch, reflector,
casing. Write these on board.
Plenary
Identify features of components: bulb – filaments
heat up, battery energy stored in chemicals, casing –
insulator, wires – conductors, reflector , lens – affects
beam

Children in pairs will take a torch and
discuss with their partners the use,
