Scale 6.2: How Much Do You Feel You Are Bothered by Stress? When there is an automobile accident and the police arrive on the scene, they are required to file an accident report. In addition to their observations, the police officers record statements made by the people involved in the accident. Here are a few of the statements that have actually appeared on police or insurance company accident reports: Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I didn't have. I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way. A pedestrian hit me and went under my car. The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him. I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed for the embankment. To avoid hitting the car in front of me, I hit the pedestrian. In my attempt to hit a fly, I drove into the telephone pole. The pedestrian had no idea which direction to run, so I ran over him. I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel.

I was on my way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way causing me to have an accident. And you thought you had problems!! Humor can go a long way toward relieving stressful situations, but the best strategy is to avoid them in the first place. One indication of how successful you are at avoiding stressors is the stressful thoughts and feelings you have. The scale on the following page identifies the stressful thoughts and feelings you typically experience. Below is a list of problems and complaints that people sometimes have. Read each one carefully. Indicate how much that problem has bothered or distressed you during the past week, including today. Indicate whether it bothered or distressed you not at all, a little bit, moderately, quite a bit, or extremely. Circle one answer for each problem. 65 gre06755_ch06.qxd 4/8/05 4:01 PM Page 65...
