Painting in Siena Giotto’s appeal was direct and immediate The scene of the most interesting new developments in the generation after Giotto was Sienea, where Duccio’s influence was much less overpowering Among Duccio’s pupils was Simone Martini In Martini’s work we find the first signs of the last great development of Gothic art, the so-called International Style Pietro Lorenzetti was born around 1280, his younger brother Ambrogio around 1285; both probably died around 1348, the year of the Black Death Ambrogio best- known work is a huge fresco that decorates an entire wall in Siena’s city hall, the Palazzo Pubblico; it was painted between 1338 and 1339 and illustrates the effects of good government on the city of Siena and the surrounding countryside

Unformatted text preview: soon became the a major art center • Around 1360, an unknown Bohemian painted a panel showing the death of the Virgin that combined the careful architecture of Sienese painting with northern Gothic art • By the end of the 14th century, it was no longer possible to identify an artist’s origins from the work • One of the first great centers of the International Style was the court of the Duke of Burgundy at Dijon, where sculptors like the Dutchman Claus Sluter and painters like the Flemish Melchior Broederlam served Duke Philip the Bold • Sluter was commissioned to provide a sculpture for the monastery ,the Chartreuse de Champmol (most impressive work there is the Well of Moses) • The most attractive details in all of late Gothic art is the Tres Riches Hures de Duc de Berry, by the Limbourg brothers – Pol, Henequin and Herman Claus Sluter.
