When an artist is expressing themselves, they use their form of art as an outlet for their emotions. We can’t chastise rappers because they are communicating their message. Eventhough to some audiences that message may not particularly be what they want to hear. In Joan Morgan’s essay, From Fly Girls to Bitches and hos, she says that “Biggie’s player persona might have momentarily convinced the listener that he was livin’ phat without a care in the world but other moments divulged his inner hell” ( Rereading America 445-446). This shows that understanding where a rapper is coming from is absolutely critical. I believe that Joan Morgan would view the lyrics of the song “Juicy” as a way for Notorious B.I.G to put his pain and triumph into words, a way for him to articulate the struggle of his life. Such as when B.I.G says “Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, when I was dead broke I couldn’t picture this.” This shows how triumphant he feels because he has achieved things that he never thought were possible. As you can see, it is crucial to know the artist’s background before you can pass
