Prerequisites This is a class about the theory of Risk and Insurance. It will rely on concepts introduced in Econ 50, such as utility maximization, individual demand and general equilibrium. In addition to Econ 50 you need to be familiar with multivariate calculus and basic statistics. Knowledge of elementary concepts of probability theory would be very helpful for understanding some of the ideas developed in this course and Econ 102A is sufficient. 2. Texts and Notes There is no text which fits the exact needs of this course. I will thus use several books each containing only part of what we need. A good background material is available in Walter Nicholson and Christopher Snyder: “Microeconomic Theory, ” 10th Edition, 2008, South- Western. Chapters 7,18 In this course we shall use four main books: (i) Brealey, Meyers and Allen: “ Principles of Corporate Finance ,” 9th Edition, 2008, McGraw- (ii) Bodie, Kane and Marcus: “Investments,” 8th Edition, 2009, McGraw-Hill. We refer to this book (ii) Jean-Jacques Laffont: “The Economics of Uncertainty and Information,” 1993, The MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. We refer to this book by the Symbol JJL (ii) Neil Doherty: “ Integrated Risk Management ,” 2000, McGraw-Hill. We refer to this book by the symbol ND. We have prepared a reader which contains some of the chapters used for this course and have selected
