FINAL PROJECT ONE 2 The United State is sandwiched between two different countries, Mexico on the Southern Border and Canada on the Northern Border. Since the United States is one of the few developed countries in the world without a Universal healthcare system a look into its neighboring countries might offer a clue on how to make healthcare more affordable and accessible in the US. To get a better idea on how the United States could move toward a Universal Health care system we should look at the Canadian Health Care system. Canada is always mention when Americans are looking for an example of affordable healthcare, cheaper prescriptions, and more coverage among the population. “Prior to 1971, the Canadian Healthcare system was very similar to that of the United States meaning it was predominantly based on employer provided health insurance with a smaller role played by various government programs”[ CITATION Car17 \l 1033 ]. This system was close to the current system in the US with physicians’ fees determined with the market and hospitals on a fee for service basis. The Canadian Medicare System was adopted in 1971 and for 49 years this system which is provided and funded by government taxes and incomes taxes has been the healthcare system of Canada. “Financing the Canadian health care system accordingly evolved incrementally within individual provinces, as they responded to market failure, with national government involvement through a series of programs to share costs with the provinces”[ CITATION Rairy \l 1033 ]. “To qualify for federal financial contributions under the Canada Health Transfer, provincial and territorial insurance plans must provide first- dollar coverage of medically necessary physician, diagnostic, and hospital services (including inpatient prescription drugs) for all eligible residents”[ CITATION The201 \l 1033 ]. This includes hospital, community and long-term care along with public health services, prevention services and mental health services. “Private insurance, held by about two-thirds of Canadians, covers services excluded from public reimbursement, such as vision and dental care, prescription

Canada is the 39 th Country in the world for population with an estimated population of 37.74 million people, for reference the entire state of California has a larger population of 40 million people. “Canada is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, with much of its land inhospitable”[ CITATION 20220 \l 1033 ]. The land area in Canada is the second largest in the world making the population density about 4 people per square kilometer. The most populated portion of Canada run along the US boarder which is the longest land border in the world. “An impressive 2.8 million Canadian citizens live outside of Canada itself ; that's equivalent to 9% of the overall Canadian population”[ CITATION 20220 \l 1033 ].
