Lecture Activity Summary #10 1) What are the positive points of your education system, since so many ‘negative’ points were discussed in lecture. 2) I was wondering how the schools in these countries stressed future careers? How much of the school work dealt with careers? 3) What extracurricular activities are common in other countries and how do they affect academics? 4) What drives students to come to college in the US if the educational systems in other countries are good?

Handrea -Indonesia 1) Students become more disciplined, they study harder at school, are motivated to do well, and they value academic achievement. Besides, because the focus is on academic achievement, misbehaviors are minimized, as students spend most of their time focusing on doing well at school instead of acting out. 2) I think schools don't do a good job in preparing their students for their future careers. There is little guidance, if any, from teachers or school personnel in terms of helping students to think about their career path. 4) I think what motivate students to come to the U.S. is to experience life in the U.S., or maybe to learn the language (if English is not the first language in their country). Perhaps it is a prestige issue to (U.S. universities are more well-known around the world).

What are the positive points of your education system, since so many ‘negative’ points were discussed in lecture. Russian education is broader in a sense that students obtain knowledge in a broad range of subjects, which not only widens their outlook but also offers them an opportunity to explore and form their interests. Generally, students are well-prepared for college after high school graduation. In college they start out with more advanced courses than they do here in the US.
