RUSSIA DEFINITIONS CONTINENTALITY – The degree of inland location away from the moderating effects of the oceans on the climates of adjacent landmasses. GOROD – One of a network of fortified trading towns through which the Vikings and Varangians organized the early economy of the Slavs (in what is now Ukraine). SOVIET – Revolutionary councils composed of worker’s groups, formed after the 1905 Revolution. The Soviet was vital as a grass roots force in the ultimate success of the Bolshevik’s 1917 uprising. OSTROGS – Strategic way-stations built by the Cossacks in river valleys across central and eastern Russia during expansion from Moscovy in the 1500’s to 1600’s. As a result, the Tatars were defeated and the Russian state was consolidated all the way to the Pacific coast. FORWARD CAPITAL – A capital city positioned in actually or potentially contested territory, usually near an international border. This location demonstrates a state’s determination to maintain its presence in the region of contention. ACCULTURATION – Cultural modification derived from intercultural borrowing.
