REVIEW SHEET EXERCISE 4 Endocrine System Physiology NAME: Courtney Boyd LAB TIME/DATE: July 14, 2010 Metabolism The following questions refer to Activity 1: Determining Baseline Metabolic Rates. 1. Which rat had the fastest baseline metabolic rate? The normal rat 2. Compare the baseline metabolic rates for the thyroidectomized rat and the normal rat and explain your results. The metabolic rate of the normal rat was about 200 times more than the metabolic rate of the thyroidectomized rat. This may be due to the difference in the ml of O2 used in each. 3. Compare the baseline metabolic rates for the hypophysectomized rat and the normal rat and explain your results. The metabolic rate for the hypophysectomized rat was slightly more than the metabolic rate of the normal rat however, they were close. This is because the ml of O2 used only had a .1ml difference and the weight difference was about 1.0. The following questions refer to Activity 2: Determining the Effect of Thyroxine on Metabolic Rate. 4. What effect did administering thyroxine have on each of the rats? There was an increase in both the weight and metabolic rate when thyroxine was administered to the normal and thyroidectomized rat. As for the hypophysectomized rat, its weight decreased by .3ml but its metabolic rate did increase. 5. Explain why thyroxine had these effects. Thyroxine had these effects because it is a hormone, produced in the thyroid gland, which speeds up the metabolic rate and regulates growth and development. Therefore, there was some weight gain when the rats were measured with the injections of thyroxine in them.
