1.0 Introduction French bean ( phaseolus vulgaris) is a popular as a dietary food as it contains lot of vitamins. French bean is climbing, trailing or more or less erect and bushy annual herb, slightly pubescent, contains very well developed tap rooting system, with many lateral and adventitious roots. French bean is a tender, warm season vegetable that cannot tolerate frost, heavy rain and stagnation. French bean requires sandy loam soil with good drainage and irrigation. French bean is the third most important agricultural export product of Kenya. The production of French bean pods for canning is important in Europe. An important amount of French bean seeds is produced in East African highlands (e.g. Kenya, Tanzania) for European seed companies. French bean in Fiji is mostly grown in small-scale production and is mostly sold in local markets only. With the rapid urbanization rate, there are not much space to crop in towns and cities.
