Washington’s Farewell In September 1796, at the end of his second  term,  Washington published his  Farewell  Address , declaring his  intention to retire from  the presidency The most famous and best known of  Washington's speeches, but it was never  delivered orally First appeared in a newspaper in  Philadelphia, and 7 days later published in the  Independent Chronicle, then throughout the  whole country

How it all started The Farewell Address was very similar to the  one he had prepared at the end of his first  term, in 1792 Madison had prepared notes For Washington  to use in formulating a speech, but the draft  was set aside when plans for retirement were  abandoned Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton  were able to convince Washington that the  growing division between Federalists and  Dem-Republicans, along with the foreign
