Kathleen DiMattia English Composition 100.01 Essay #1 7\1\10 Rights The dictionary defines rights as, “legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement ”. This is a very vague and general statement, but the concept of rights includes so much that one can’t help but be vague. Rights include everything from human rights to legal rights, and are usually dictated by the society we live in. For example, the United States of America, as a democratic republic, gives its citizens the right to “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;” Whereas, in a communist nation like Cuba, one has the right to equality and fair pay. In the end, everyone’s opinions on what does and should qualify as a right are different. No one can say for sure one way or the other. To me, rights represent everything people should be able to do; if we lived in a utopian society people would always follow these rules without being told. However, we do not live in paradise, so rights need to be enforced. Rules like the Geneva
