EM 319 Mechanics of Solids Introduction • What is Mechanics? Mechanics is a branch of physics that is concerned with the analysis of the action of forces on matter or material systems. Mechanics is generally divided into the mechanics of fluids and the mechanics of solids . • What are Solids? We call a material a solid rather than fluid if it can support shearing forces in addition to normal forces. In this course, we assume solids are continuous. • What is Mechanics of Solid? Mechanics of Solids is a subject concerned with the stressing, deformation and failure of solids. What Is Mechanics of Solids 3
