Solution MECH2100 Tutorial 11 2011 Question 1 Aluminium plates are fastened together with brass rivets, the Aluminium will corrode. Lead sheet is pop-riveted with special bronze fasteners, the Lead will corrode. Galvanized steel is riveted with copper rivets, the Galvanised steel will corrode. Question 2 AISI 301 stainless steel plates are fastened together with (1) chromium plated steel cap screws, and (2) titanium cap screws, respectively. The environment involves moisture, and possibly some salt. In case (1), the chromium cap screws will corrode, since the chromium cap screws is more anodic than 301 stainless steel ; in case (2), the titanium cap screws will not corrode, since the 301 stainless steel is more anodic than titanium cap screws . Question 3 p = T/ (2 π μ R 2 L ) = 4000/(2*3.14159*0.15*0.1 2 *0.18) = 2.358 MPa.
