Head and Neck Examination Say to pt: “Please have a seat with your neck exposed below the clavicles.” Inspection . -I am inspecting the HAIR for: color and distribution. -I am inspecting the SCALP surface. (move hair to do so) -Inspecting the HEAD for: Position, Tilt, and Rotation. -Inspecting the SKULL for: Size, Shape, Symmetry, Condition. -Inspecting the FACE for: Shape, Symmetry, Structural Abnormalities -Inspecting for BATTLE SIGNS (over mastoids) and DEMUSSET’S SIGN (head bob) -Inspecting the NECK for: Symmetry of muscles, Webbing, Masses, Edema -Observe TRACHEAL POSITION -Ask Patient to SWOLLOW (observe only) -Check for DISTENDED VEINS AND ARTERIES and SKIN COLOR VARIATIONS -Ask patient to FLEX/EXTEND, LAT. Rotate L/R, and LAT. FLEXION L/R Palpation -Palpate HAIR for Texture. -Palpate SCALP to see if it is FREELY MOVABLE -Palpate SKULL for: Symmetry and Condition -Palpate TEMPORAL ARTERIES for: Thickening or Hardening -Palpate: HYOID BONE, THRYOID CARTILAGE, CRICOID CARTILAGE, Pt. SWOLLOWING, THYROID GLAND and TRACHEAL TUG
