1 Running head: MODULE ONE CASE The successful person makes a habit of doing what the failing person doesn't like to do. -Thomas Edison Introduction When an organization is struggling to achieve its goals, often times there are problems within the organization. These problems need to be corrected if there is going to be a sustainable future for the company. While not all problems are in plain sight the few that are can be fixed easier than the ones that are system based. If the products fail to arrive due to unreliable shipping methods, it’s a simple fix. If the products fail to arrive due to an unknown problem then the search is on to find the kink in the hose that is slowing the flow. This is where the importance of organizational diagnostics tools (OD) comes into the picture. OD, simply put is a way to understand the organizations system and based on that understanding, determine if change is desirable (Aldefer). While it seems like a rather simple process there is more to it than a simple snapshot of the organization. There are a handful of methods used to conduct an OD process of

MODULE ONE CASE 2 an organization. Each model has its strengths and its weaknesses and must be carefully chosen in order to obtain real results. This is where the understanding of the problems that are facing the organization is important. In the case of Industrial Services of America, Inc there are a handful of problems facing the organization. When an organization is facing problems how can they benefit from the use of an OD model? Body While organizational problems often frustrate management and employees, there are methods to help find and fix these problems. These methods are OD systems. The OD system helps describe what is going on in the organization vs. what should be going on in the organization. After this is discovered the organization can look at ways to fix the problems and adjust practices accordingly. The importance of OD should not be understated, but which model should the organization pick to conduct the evaluation? There are a handful of systems that are used in the OD process. While no one OD system is perfect they all serve as a tool in a tool box. Like any managerial tool box each tool has a specific purpose and while they are interchangeable (to some extent), no one tool is perfect for every job. Like driving a nail in a piece of wood, a rock would work, but the hammer is the ideal tool. For an organization there are several tools to choose from in order to drive the nail, but picking the best for the job is slightly more difficult. Many organizations face problems of varying size and scope. While these problems have no limitations on the affect they can have on an organization, there are limitations on the methods to find and correct them. Next is an overview of the systems and their abilities and limitations.
