2.19.07 Writing a Great Critical Analysis Paper What is the Critical Analysis Paper? A review that includes three specific parts Description Opinion Analysis Description Gives all the facts about the production, bare minimum necessary for a review. Thank of these as the kinds of questions that you would answer if a friend asked you what show you saw last night. You would answer the basic W’s When?- Wednesday night September 20 th at 8pm Where? What? Who? Production elements o Playwriting o Direction o Acting o Lighting o Set o Sound o Props o Etc. Address all areas of the production and give names o When providing descriptions of a play include information about all aspects of the production and name the person responsible for it. Remember, it’s normal for some elements to be more important in some productions than others. It isn’t necessary to give equal time to each element. Some aspects only require a mentioning. What is not acceptable is a paper about one element only. The danger of being merely descriptive o While descriptive facts are essential to a good review, don’t get bogged down in descriptions. Merely descriptive papers are weaker papers. This kind of paper goes on for pages and pages about exactly what the set looked like but forgets to tell us how the set relates to what the play is
