11 m = 93 million miles Sun is 108 times larger in diameter as compared to Earth. Speed of light: c = 3 x 10 5 km/s (300,000) Distance light travels in 1 year = 9.46 x 10 12 km/yr ~ 10 13 km/yr = 1 light year Sun to Earth = 8 light-minutes Nearest Star = 4.4 light year Orion Nebula (star group) = 1500 light year Andromeda Galaxy = 2.5 million light year 1.3 Spaceship Earth A universe in motion We are moving with the Earth, not just in one direction. The Earth rotates around it’s axis once every day. Aphelion: farthest point from the Sun in orbit = 152.1 million km Perihelion: nearest point to the Sun in orbit = 147.1 million km Earth average orbital speed = 108,000 km/hr The Earth’s axis is tilted by 23.5 o Our Sun and the stars of the local Solar neighborhood orbit around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy every 230 million years. Distance between our Solar system and centre of Milky Way Galaxy = 28000 light year The Milky Way moves with the expansion of the Universe. Mostly all galaxies appear to be moving away from us.
