His caste is out of a soldier & must fullfill that duty and will move up to a higher caste. o Hinduism Polytheistic Tolerations for other religious Castes Brahmans as intermediaries o Islam Monotheistic Spreading the word an important part of islam Egalitarian Religiously, its all about your relationshhip with Allah no matter what you are or what your job is o Sikhs o Guru Nanak (d.1538) Neither muslim nor Hindu o o Opposed strict religious guidelines o Takes best from both religions to create very mystical quality to Sikhs Hindu devotion is the concept that Hindu should be devoted to specific God that speaks specifically to their purpose in life (to their caste). About finding & identifying with a God to help you thru path Akbar “the Great” (r. 1556-1605) o Repeals poll tax for just being alive in 1564. All ppl in india should pay the same taxes no matter what religious you are

Recruits ulemma that arent extreme & generate Shari’a with quran but also apply to non- muslims o Cultural patronage o Steps toward religious toleration Create law without rebelling against Mughals. Tries to include Hindus in local governments Commission lots of art. Mughal art. Hindu art was sensual & ok to depict sexual scenes as art & ok to expose female body Akbar invited religious leaders from around the world to debate about religious. Invites buddhist monks, jesuits (to talk about catholicism), hindu Brahmins. Tolerance in a culture that’s not particularly tolerant (*why he’s so Great) o Expanded empire Akbar’s Successros o Taj Mahal built when he dies One of the most expensive things to build & uses tax money to pay for taj mahal, cultural patronage, building cities. Causes tax burden for citizens. o Expanded the empire o Put that poll tax back into place just for existing o Largest quantity of exports in the world Cotton textiles Keep in mind British & Dutch East Indian Company & portuguese ships all still happening Decline of the Mughal Empire o Economic problems
