Sze Wing Ho TA: Ulias Pina History 15 Section 31 11/22/2010 In the book, Leopold II is portrayed as a power-mad person, driven merely by avarice. “He had long want to Colony Empire only for one purpose: make him and his country rich. Also he drove for colonies, was shaped by desire not only for money but power too”. 1 He found that the exploitation of rubber in Congo could get a lot of profit. Then he abused the forced labor to do work for him without getting an equal benefit. Under the rule of King Leopold II, there exceeded 10 million Congolese have died. The numerous deaths and mistreatments should be attributed to the system that he set up for the exploitation of rubber. Under his reign, Congo Free States have caused many other European countries’ attention because of his brutal treatment of the indigenous people and plunder of natural resources. King Leopold’s avarice, selfish, barbarous mistreatment and manipulation led to the end of his administration of Congo and to the annexation of the Congo as a colony of Belgium. The reign of Leopold II is described as “genocidal”. “Genocide can only be used if there is a clear intention to destroy a population on nationalistic, ethnic, racial or religious grounds”. 2
