Chorus o Finds safe place between extremes o Asks questions that the audience may ask the characters o Never gets to passionate o Group mentality Central scene of Antigone o Haimon cares both for his father and his fiancé o He is reasonable – logical tries to negotiate o Reinforces that Creon will not listen to anyone else just as Antigone won’t listen to her sister o Creon is inflexible so he is doomed – his ideas don’t take human nature into account o Haimon is portrayed as wise beyond his years o Antigone is buried alive in a cave – recognizes that she is going to die o Chrous begins to mock her rather than support her o Creon comes to his senses says to release Antigone o But she has already hung herself in the cave o Haimon dies o Creons wife kills herself because she realizes that both her sons are dead o Tragic choice – to include more than just the individuals themselves, other innocent ppl lose their lives o Concluding scene = pathos (scene of suffereing) helps us focus in on the
