The Tragedy of Afghanistan Location and historical background o Soviets invade in 1979 o A second American Vietnam o Located in south central asia, land locked, borderd by Pakistan, iran but these borders are poorly recognized. Hindu Kush Mountainous topography – only 10% of the land is cultivate-able. Regional and local control, capital has never had a strong centralized government, semi-autonomous economic and political entities. Multi-cultural, multi-ethnic state (pashtun – largest group, group from which the Taliban came from, they stretch across a border into Pakistan (pashtunistan – persecute other ethnic groups and look out for their own interests) these ppl move across this artificial border as if it didn’t exist and the Taliban have a safe haven on this border. Ethnic identity trumps national identity. o Afghanistan is the Graveyard of empires – easy to invade but hard to control and get out of in one piece o Loyajerga (various tribes of Afghanistan) – called to appointed current president
