Gamal Abdel Nasser and Nasserism – key leader of the Egyptian nationalist movement, establishes a presidential dictatorhship Anti-imperialism Pan-arab nationalism One-party presidential dictatorship o Becomes a model for other arab leaders o Nasserism – modern, secular ideology designed to meet the needs of the post colonial arab world Anti-western , free themselves from western tutelage (anti-imperialism) But interested in western technology and nationalism Promotes nationalism, pan-arab nationalism Unite the arab world into one United Arab Republic Anti-israeli sentiment – wipe out new state of Israel, which they thought was an outpost of western colonialism Authoritarian with popular component in that it speaks o the masses with democratic characteristics but it is largely authoritarian Moderate socialism – state plays a key role in modernizing the economy by directing investing Aswan Dam – key project, largest hydroelectric plant, modernizing socialism
