o King Leopold II’s colony: rubber, slavery, and genocide Congo’s rubber resources exploited by Leopold by effectively enslaving congo ppl Force publique – made of largely of Africans with white officers Up to 10 million died as a direct result of Belgium colonial exploitation o The congo vs. India: tow models of colonialism Belgians do not do much in the way of nation building – only one railroad, a few canals, but they do not work to create an effective indigenous elite that would govern the colony after they left No competent, educated, coherent elite that could run the country after the Belgians left No unified sense of national identity o Toward Independence The very ppl who’s only experience in governing the congo came from the force publique – in suppressing the peoples The legacy makes it difficult to create a functioning state let a lone a thriving democracy Initially wanted to Slowly grant the congo its independence over 30 years
