o Criteria Grave disability – someone is so incapacitated that they cant care for their basic needs, food, shelter, clothing Danger to self or danger to others – imminent threat, specific elements – is there a plan o Dangerousness and mental illness Accuracy of predicting dangerousness In short term: yes – predicting imminent danger In long time: no Ethical constraints – evaluate a bunch of ppl, determine if u think they’re going to be dangerous, let them all go (you’re letting ppl go that you really believe are dangerous) Can predict groups at greater risk for violence o Pervious hx of violence + substance dependence Cannot predict well if a certain individuals will become violent Are those with mental illness especially likely to be violent? Mental illness is associated with a very small proportion of violence There is some evidence of increased violence with certain symptoms (delusions and hallucinations) Aggression by MI typically against family/friends
