o Neurobiological “reward center” in brain that psychoactive substances activate Ventral tegmental area (VTA) – dopamine rich o Animal studies – if VTA is stimulated the animals act like they received something pleasant. They will work for stimulation of VTA o Psychological Operant conditioning o Positive reinforcement Use drugs – feels good – repeated use Mouse lever pressing, stimulating a certain part of the brain would keep doing work to go the stimulation o Negative reinforcement Use drugs – relieves pain, decreases neg. feelings – repeated use Allows escape, self-medication Classical conditioning Environmental stimuli associated with drug taking may elicit… o Positive feelings and cravings OR withdrawal sx o Both provide risk for relapse Alcohol Myopia – alcohol impairs cognitive processing and narrows attention to most immediate available cues Less cognitive capacity to distribute, cannot multitask
