o Side effects extrapyramidal sx – motor difficulties (tremors, shuffling gait) Tardive dyskinesia – after long term use at high doses, involuntary movements of the face and mouth; irreversible o About 25% don’t respond at all New/2 nd generation anti-psychotic drugs 1980’s aka atypical anti-psychotics – influence dopamine, serotonin, stabilize dopamine levels (clozapine, risperdol, zyperxa) Reduce positive and negative sx Fewer side effects – controversial, no tardive dyskinesia , but some require regular blood draws to monitor white blood cells Still, some don’t respond General themes Side effects Compliance – majority stop taking their meds from time to time, side effects are worse than dealing with the disorder, some believe that they are better, that they don’t need meds anymore, others are paranoid about the medication, cost, poor social support Lowest effective dose – finding the dosage that reduces symptoms with fewest side effects
