Superego – our conscience and societal values conveyed by parents and society that is controlled by unconscious forces, we unconsciously know and understand what is right or wrong, moral principles Ego – balances the Id and the Superego, works in our conscious awareness and operates on the reality principle and tries to make you act logically The id and superego are at war – “unconscious intrapsychic conflicts” so the ego mediates b/w the immediate desire for gratification and the demands of reality and societal constraints, reconcile so that both the id and the supergo both get what they want in a realistic response o Explaining psychopathology Unconscious conflicts that are not successfully resolved: if the ego cannot find the middle ground, can’t balance the Id’s demands with reality this produces psychopathology If the Id is too strong – acting out disorders, aggressive disorders If the Superego is too strong – anxiety disorders o Implications for treatment
