o A lot of theories, but based on what we know, none of these theories in and of itself seem to be a complete idea of what we know about language development Language o Symbols Systems for representing thoughts, feelings, and knowledge and for communicating them to others o Language Communication system in which words, and their written symbols combine in rule-governed ways and enable speakers to produce and infinite number of messages o Generativity Using the finite set of words in our vocabulary we can generate an infinite number of sentences and express an infinite number of ideas o Basic componenets Phonology – the system of sounds of a language Physical development – have to have a certain level of development to produce language Phonemes – elementary units of meaningful sound o Rake vs. laes o Dog vs. log Phonological development – acquisition of knowledge about the sound systems in ones language Semantics – study of word meanings and word combinations
