Erikson Life span developmental theory o Proposed 8 age related development stages that span infancy to old age in which each stage is characterized by a crisis. o An unresolve task will impede developmental progress Basic trust vs. Mistrust (birth to 1 year) Trust others and themselves, achieved through consistent love Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt (1-3 years) Motor skills, language development Need a supportive atmosphere to help them gain control Extreme punishment can hinder resolution of this conflict Initiative vs. Guilt (4-6years) Learning to identify and learning from their parents Gain a conscious Internalize rules Industry vs. Inferiority (6 yrs to puberty) Knowing ones self-worth Identity vs. role confusion (adolescence and early adulthood) Who am I? o Learning theories – emphasize the role of external factors in shaping social behavior, in which theorists focus on specific mechanisms of change and continuity Watson and Behaviorism
