The family The nature and functions of the family o Families serve several functions regardless of culture: Survival of offspring Economic function Cultural trainging o Dimensions and styles of parenting o Parenting styles – parenting behaviors and attitudes that set the emotional climate of parent-child interactions 2 dimensions: Demandingness (control) and Responsiveness (warmth) Responsiveness – warmth, support, and acceptance versus rejection and nonresponsiveness Demandingness – demanding and restrictive verussu undemanding and permissive Authoritative – high in demandingness and responsiveness Results in competent, self-assured, popular with peers, self controlled children Authoritarian – high in demandingness and low in responsiveness, focused on their power and obedience Results in low social and academic confidence, unhappy and unfriendly, low self confidence Permissive – low in demandingness and high in responsiveness
