What do IQ scores predict? o IQ is a strong predictor of academic, economic, and occupational success o IQ scores correlate positively and strongly with school grades and achievement tests The first big BUT of intelligence tests: bias o Back to issues of reliability and validity… IQ tests are standardized, but the norms are collected from the majority (white, middle class males) Problems can occurs when tests are constructed and normed for the majority but are administered to the minority o It is a fact that IQ scores differ among groups: The avg IW of white American children is 15 points higher than that of African American children Asian-american scores are higher than those of any other group in the US Race, ethnicity, and intelligence o Children of all race and ethnicities display the whole range of IQ scores o There are differences in ethnic performance on subtests Performance scores are higher than verbal scores for native Americans, latinos, and Asian Americans
