Section 442 – Arada Malekian Thursday, February 17, 2011 Alec Rubenstein Partner: Andres Novoa Pledge: Abstract: The goal of this experiment is to study the motion of a freely-falling projectile launched at both a zero launch angle and a general launch angel. There are two parts to this lab: The purpose of Part 1 of the lab was to explore if increasing the initial velocity of a ball launch horizontally affected the time-of-flight of the projectile. The purpose of Part 2 of the lab was to predict and verify the range and time-of-flight of a projectile launched at an angle of 30° In Part 1 of the experiment, the projectile launcher was set to zero degrees and the ball was launched for a series of five trials at slow speed. The ball was launched through a photogate attached to the end of the launcher to a flight plate sitting on the ground to measure the time of flight. The launcher was then set to medium speed and the process was repeated. The vertical distance of the launcher and horizontal distance for each trial was also measured. In Part 2 of the experiment, the initial velocity of the projectile at a slow setting was first measured using two photogates at a distance of 0.01020 m apart. Using the initial velocity and the two formulas for time-of-flight and range, the theoretical time-of-flight and range of a projectile launched at 30° were calculated. Once the initial velocity was calculated, the ball was launched five times at 30° and the time-of-flight was measured using a photogate and flight pad and the range was measured using a tape measure. The Time-of-flight vs. initial velocity and Projectile Motion results support that the initial velocity of a ball launched horizontally does not affect the time-of-flight of the projectile and that the range and time-of-flight of a projectile launched at an angle can be calculated.
