Usually one or two sentences is entirely sufficient. Lists can be used when appropriate. 1. What is the preemptive war doctrine? What president is associated with this doctrine? 2. Explain the military industrial complex as an iron triangle. 3. How does U.S. military spending compare to that of other nations? From the standpoint of the U.S. economy, what is the problem with high military expenditures? What are two major economic goals that are advanced by the U.S. predominance as a military power? 4. Explain the earned income tax credit ? 5. Provide three reasons to explain why the education system represents a major challenge to maintaining U.S. economic well being in the next 25 years. 6. Explain why Patterson claims that the U.S. welfare system is inefficient? 7. Briefly discuss how medicare policy and administration has changed from its inception in 1965 until now. 8. Explain the idea of comparative advantage . 9. What is the W.T.O. and according to Patterson what is its mission? 10. Explain the idea of an effective tax rate and list the main components of the taxes paid by most middle-income citizens in the U.S. 11. Which of the components of the taxes paid by most middle-income Americans are regressive? Why do richer Americans pay less tax than richer Europeans? Cumulative portion of the exam. (Hint, among the factors you might consider are (a) the party system, (b) the committee system, and (c) the changing role of the U.S. president.) 2. The ideas of pluralism, elitism, and majoritarianism are all relevant to studying American democracy. (a) Provide a brief explanation of each concept, (b) then pick one of the three as most appropriate for explaining American politics, and then defend that choice.
